Home Safely and Praying for Honduras

During our travel to San Pedro Sula, we had the opportunity to see and experience what the rest of Honduras is like.  We traveled through the poverty in rual villages and tasted delicious fresh fruit from a roadside market.  After cheking into our hotel, we visited a market to buy some gifts and watch local women make fresh hand-made tortillas.  After our last team dinner, we began processing what we had learned and the adjustments we will have to make when we return to the USA.  We closed our time with each person sharing some personal prayer requests and then lifting them up to the Lord.

The purposes of the Athletes in Action Sports Performance educational clinic trips are to not only share our professional expertise and God's love, but to also encourage and equip each team member in their personal relationship wtih God.  I saw how we each grew as we learned more about depending upon the Holy Spirit to live the Christian life and share God's love more effectively.  Our hearts were filled with His love for each team member and for the people of Honduras.  We have been receiving regular updates from our staff and friends in Honduras about the state of the political unrest.  The most recent ones shared that it is getting worst with possible violence spreading in the country.  Please join our team in praying for peace and for God's will to be done in Honduras!

Day Four! (blog by Kim Detwiler)

Wow, has it really been four days?! It doesn’t really feel like it. Perhaps that is because we received confirmation that we would be able to lecture today! Now it seems like we have so much to do in so little time! Good news! We woke up for breakfast and were ready to roll out to the Olympic Committee office across the complex. We arrived at 9am and we were excited! As we were just about ready to start off our day of teaching, I ran to the restroom. On my way back, I started talking to Lissette who told me that they had closed the borders of Honduras, and the President is planning to come back to Honduras on Thursday. With that, Jim said we would probably be leaving Honduras tomorrow, 2 days early. Honestly, I almost teared up. We were finally getting rolling on our lecture and now we have to leave early. With that news, I went inside to watch Matt lecture.

Matt spoke on neurophysiology and he did GREAT!! After he finished, Jim headed to the airport with Lisette to try to get us a flight home tomorrow. He was gone for the majority of the afternoon. We got a couple reports from him, all of them indicating getting home wouldn’t be simple. So, we waited. Juan presented next with the help of Hannah on body composition, and they did a great job too. We taught them how to use skin calipers and they seemed to enjoy that. Then we had a lunch break and moved back over to the hotel building. We spoke with Jim again and he said we should pack up just in case we have to leave tonight. We ate lunch and got ready for the next presentation…mine!

I presented on PNF – proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation. This is a rehabilitation technique. At the beginning, they weren’t very engaged as I was just teaching them the principles and concepts. But, as soon as I got up and started showing them the techniques on Hannah, my lovely model, they all became more engaged and started asking questions. The funniest thing was, as soon as I told them I was going to show them hamstring stretches that would be good for athletes like SOCCER PLAYERS, their ears perked up and they started really listening. They like soccer here. I had a couple people ask me to email them my ppt which was encouraging, and even had some people ask questions! My powerpoint was translated into Spanish which helped Joaquin, our translator, out quite a bit.

After I presented, Jules presented on kinesiotape, and they absolutely LOVED that! He also threw in some massage techniques, which they loved even more. Then Hannah presented on warm up and recovery which included some demonstrations. All in all I feel like we had a great day of teaching. At the end, they had a “closing ceremony,” which included Matt giving his testimony, Joaquin giving some closing words about Christ which included an opportunity for attendees to accept Christ into their heart as their Lord and Savior. I heard at least one voice repeating the prayer, maybe two, which was so encouraging, and made the entire trip worthwhile. I couldn’t understand what Joaquin was saying, but I could feel his energy and am not surprised that some attendees made a decision for Christ today. Then, Eneyda spoke and concluded with a prayer for the country of Honduras. We were presented with certificates of appreciation and the day (and program) officially ended.

Many attendees came up and thanked us with a hug and kiss on the cheek. I feel like we really did something significant today. Even if our 5 days of teaching got cut down to one full day, we made an impact on the medical professionals who attended. It felt great to serve them by sharing with them new knowledge and concepts, and it was so fun to watch the light bulbs turn on as they learned. I teach every day and I rarely see the excitement in my students’ faces that I saw today. And, I feel like we let Christ's light shine on them as we are called to do.

What comes next, you might ask? Well, we are headed out of Tegucigalpa tomorrow morning and taking a 4-5 hour drive to San Pedro Sula. This is the 2nd largest town in Honduras, and apparently the place the team flew into last year. We will stay in a hotel on Wednesday night and then jump on a 7am flight to Houston on Thursday and be back in the USA. This is, of course, if all goes as planned. So far, nothing has, so we’re ready for it! As Jim keeps saying, the theme of this trip is to “flex and obey.”

I will hopefully blog more tonight after I’ve had time to digest all that happened today. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had today to share my passion, and feel that I might be just as fulfilled as I would’ve been had I lectured 5 days in a row.

We are safe, tired, and ready for some dinner! Talk to you soon!

Out and About in Tegucigalpa!

This morning we awoke hoping for good news from our Olympic Committee contacts.  We had breakfast and then some devotional time where we focused on glorifying God and giving him the accolades and glory.  Our Olympic Committee and AIA contact people arrived at about 9am, and we were told that again today our sessions would be canceled based on the political situation here in Tegucigalpa.  We met a new friend, Peter, who explained to us bluntly and simply what the situation in Honduras really is which was helpful to say the least.  He eased our minds and also injected some much-needed energy into the group when he suggested we go to the grocery store and the mall.  We were ready to get out and explore the city a little...or at least explore outside of the OTC campus walls - which we have thoroughly explored during the last 2 days.  While out and about in the city, everything looked to be business as usual.  We even took a drive by the ex-president's house on our way to a friend's house and there was nothing suspicious to indicate any drama had happened there.  We were encouraged by being out in the city and seeing that things are safe and peaceful.  We swung by the hotel on our way to a tourist area in Honduras, but rather than heading out again, Peter told us that we should stay in the hotel for the evening due to some peaceful protests and some rumors of military action by America and Venezuela.  So, we were quarantined to the OTC once again.  We spent the afternoon checking in with family, going for a long walk, and exercising.  We spent the evening eating dinner and playing cards.  Juan and I were the only ones to play spoons before, so we enlightened the group and kept ourself busy for a couple hours.  As the night winds down, we spent some time with Kessel, a track athlete, kinesiotaping his knee, helping him with his squatting mechanics, and talking about his future as a track and field athlete.  He leaves to compete in Cuba tomorrow, so we are looking forward to praying for him and hearing how/if the kineseotape helps his knee.

We are scheduled to begin lecturing tomorrow at 9am.  We aren't sure what tomorrow will hold, but we are hoping we will be able to begin serving the athletes and medical professionals here in the Tegucigalpa area.  We will be praying for the Lord's will in our service to the Honduran people, that He will equip us to share our knowledge and Gods' love with those who come to the conference.  If things don't go as planned and we again cannot lecture, we will be praying for discernment and wisdom as far as how to proceed.  We have been a bit frustrated at being confined to the hotel for the majority of our trip, but it has provided us some great time in the Word, in prayer, learning so much about each other, and growing as a team.  There has been laughter, tears, truth, and knowledge shared among this group, and we are looking forward to sharing these things and more with the medical professionals and athletes we meet tomorrow.

Please pray for the Lord's will to be done, clear answers to our questions, and that our conference goes better than planned tomorrow as well as safety for us and the Honduran people.  Good night!!

Honduras Sports Performance Team Safe and Preparing for Educational Clinics Despite Political Unrest

The Honduras Sports Performance team arrived safely in Tegucigalpa on Friday only to find out about the political unrest going on.  Staying safely at the Honduran Olympic Training Center complex, the team has used the cancilation of Saturday and Sunday's events to build team unity, prepare for the educational clinics, have team Bible studies, and encourage the local athletes and Athletes in Action staff.  We will find out Monday morning if we will be able to do our educational clinics for Monday.  There are possible opportunities to work with the Soccer Federation on Thursday and meet with the Olympic Committee President and Sports Medicine Director to discuss helping with the medical coverage for the Central American Games in December.  We are waiting upon the Lord for his guidance and direction.  Thank you for your Prayers!
